The Structure and Function of the Brain
The brain is the central control center that regulates all human cognition, emotion, and behavior. Its structure and function are extremely complex and sophisticated. In this article, we will explore the main structures of the brain and their respective functions.
1. Cerebrum
Structure The cerebrum is the largest part of the brain, divided into two hemispheres. Each hemisphere is composed of four lobes: the frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, and occipital lobe.
Function

Structure The brainstem is composed of the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata.
Function
- Midbrain: Processes visual and auditory information and controls eye movements.
- Pons: Regulates breathing, sleep, and arousal, and acts as a critical neural bridge between the brain and spinal cord.
- Medulla Oblongata: Regulates essential autonomic functions such as heart rate, respiration, and digestion, which are vital for life.
4. Limbic System
Structure The limbic system consists of several structures, including the hippocampus, amygdala, and hypothalamus.
Function The limbic system plays an important role in processing emotions, forming memories, motivation, and learning.
- Hippocampus: Involved in memory formation and spatial navigation.
